After years of internal planning and pauses caused by the pandemic, MODS engaged Roto to develop a concept for the new Discovery Center that offered playful exploration of STEM experiences that would lead to lifelong learning for all families.
The nearly 4,000 sf of exhibit space feature three themed areas that highlight the area’s local industries and ecosystems – “Ocean to Air,” “Everglades,” and “Citrus Grove.” Each area features multiple interactive elements that offer layers of learning opportunities.
Within the gallery is a “Cloud Climber” that takes visitors from the ocean floor to the upper atmosphere in an active play climber filled with surprises. The suspended airplane cockpit contains imaginary controls, communication radio, and spinning front propeller.
A unique projection element in the “Day in the Everglades” exhibit creates dynamic animations that take the space through four times of day in the Everglades – Dawn, Afternoon Showers, Sunset, and Twilight. New animals are introduced with each time of day and overhead speakers create a multisensory, layered experience.
Visitors can also “pick” citrus from playful ball trees in the Citrus Picking Grove, collect them into fruit crates and transport them through a series of interactive stations to the Juicing and Packing Factories and an open water play area.
