Dragonflyer & Flowers
Roto is honored to have designed and built two bespoke creations for Dayton Children’s Hospital. The first, “Dragonflyer,” is an original creation inspired by the Wright Brothers’ Dayton legacy and the concept of “Nature.” The unique elegance of a dragonfly was reimagined through the lens of the Wright Brothers’ early airplane models, giving children control of the creature’s wings, propeller eyes, and pulsing lights from inside the cockpit.
The second installation, created in 2022, captured another moment of delight in five custom flower and raindrop sculptures constructed of hardwood and metal with acrylic flower petals coated in dichroic film to cast iridescent splashes of color throughout their new 152,000 sf five-story medical facility tower. Designed to share a sense of flight and freedom, the sculpture is also visible from the outside, extending the flowers’ joy beyond the building.
Together, these installations embody a distinct blend of technological innovation and artistic whimsy while creating a calming, joyful space to provide respite for both children and caregivers.
