Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum provides a comprehensive history of the legacy of slavery in the United States just blocks from one of the most prominent slave auction spaces in America in Montgomery, Alabama. In 2021, EJI looked to Roto, a trusted partner, to design and expedite the production of a new 40,000 sq. ft. exhibition space to accommodate the crowds visiting the acclaimed museum.

After its overwhelmingly successful 2018 opening, Equal Justice Initiative turned to Roto’s design build services to quickly increase the museum’s original footprint four-fold, to more than 40,000 sq. ft. and expand the number of galleries from five to 13.

The large expansion was successfully managed and installed within an ambitious seven-month project deadline, culminating with the opening of the new Legacy Museum at the new location in downtown Montgomery.

Roto worked closely with the EJI team to bring their design vision to life through the new museum’s expansive size to convey the magnitude and impact of systemic racism in the United States through detailed interactive content, firm, images, and first-person narratives.
