Facility Master Plan

Reuben H Fleet Science Center

Fleet First Floor View 11x17

Attached to Balboa Park in beautiful San Diego, this science center executive team and Board asked Roto to provide a comprehensive study of facility flow, wayfinding, admissions, retail, café and theater queuing while improving accessibility and flexibility of major exhibit galleries.

  • Architectural design supporting relocated entrance.
  • Schematic-level design for new admissions area, wayfinding.
  • New design and renderings for expanded café and retail.
  • Modeling and sightline study for renovated main exhibit gallery.

Concept rendering for proposed new museum entrance

Roto’s plan shows a relocated museum entrance, prominently featured adjacent to an open plaza on Balboa Park. This plan also takes advantage of the giant screen theater’s large and underutilized queuing area, converting it to a larger and more accessible retail store, and permitting the expansion of the café, also off the Balboa Park entry.

The former admissions area could then be converted into 2-story exhibit space, adjacent to building’s main first floor exhibit gallery, while greatly improving intuitive wayfinding and overall visitor flow. Centered on the newly configured gallery are the elevator and new stairs, with improved overlooks from the 2nd floor on three sides.
